Mongolia’s Khuvsgul Lake National Park added to UNESCO reserve list – UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves Khuvsul Lake National Park of Mangolia has been added to the World Network of Biosphere Reserve of UNESCO. The decision of adding Khuvsgal Lake National Park to the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves was taken during the 34th session of the International Co-ordinating Council of the Man and Biosphere Programme taking place in Paris, France. 

  • The Man and Biosphere Programme is to establish a scientific relationship between the people and their environments.

Khuvsgul Lake National Park: Where it is located?

  • The Khuvsgul Lake is situated in northern Mongolian province of Khuvsgul, near to Russian border and holds nearly 70% of the country’s freshwater or 0.4 percent of the world’s total. 
  • It is 1,645 metres above the sea level, 136 km long and 262 metres deep.

UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves

  • The World Network of Biosphere Reserves includes a dynamic and interactive network of sites of excellence and fosters the harmonious integration of the people and nature for sustainable development through participatory dialogue; knowledge sharing; poverty reduction and human well-being improvements.
