Mobile app KURMA for turtles in India

  • The Number of conservation agencies has introduced a citizen science initiative, a mobile-based app called KURMA on the occassion of World Turtle Day. it aims to save turtles in India. KURMA App has been prepared by the Indian Turtle Conservation Action Network (ITCAN) with the help of Turtle Survival Alliance-India and Wildlife Conservation Society-India.
  • This app will work as a digital database and freely available. KURMA App covers 29 species of freshwater turtles and tortoises of India and also includes information on turtle identification, distribution, vernacular names, and threats.

Important Points

  • in the country, Tortoise and freshwater turtles are most trafficked. according to the report of 2019 TRAFFIC that highlights at least 200 tortoises and freshwater turtles are being trafficked in a week of the period and 11,000 each year. this data is between September 2009 and September 2019.
