International Yoga Day 2023: How to Perform Surya Namaskar Correctly – Every year, the International Day of Yoga is observed on June 21st. the day is also known as World Yoga Day. In 2014, it was officially declared by the United Nations General Assembly to promote global awareness and adoption of yoga following a proposal from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

  • The main objective of the day is to highlight the benefits of practicing yoga for physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.
  • The International Day of Yoga aims to encourage people of all age groups and fitness levels to participate in yoga activities.

Steps to perform Surya Namaskar

  • Pranam Asana (The Prayer pose)
  • Hastha Utanasana (Raised arm pose)
  • Padahastasana (Standing forward bend)
  • Ashwa Sanchalanasana (Equestrian pose)
  • Santholanasana (Plank Pose)
  • Ashtanga Namaskar Asana (Eight limbed salutation)
  • Bhujangasana (Cobra pose)

Step-by-step Guide to Perform Surya Namaskar Correctly

Start in Tadasana (Mountain Pose) – First, you will stand tall with your feet together and will palms pressed together in front of your chest (Namaste position), and relax your shoulders.

Inhale – Next, you will extend your arms out to the sides and lift them up overhead, arching your back slightly as you look up. this move is known as Hasta Uttanasana (Raised Arms Pose).

Exhale – Further, you will need to fold forward from the hips and bring your hands to the floor beside your feet. Bend your knees if necessary. the move is called Uttanasana (Standing Forward Bend).

Inhale – Now, you will have to step your right leg back into a lunge position, with your right knee on the floor, and raise your head and chest. the process is known as Ashwa Sanchalanasana (Low Lunge Pose).

Exhale – After that, you will have to Step your left leg back and come into a plank position, aligning your body in a straight line. It is called Dandasana (Plank Pose).

Ashtanga Namaskara – Now, you will exhale and will lower your knees, chest, and chin to the floor. Keep your elbows close to your sides. the move is known as Ashtanga Namaskara (Eight-Limbed Salutation).

Inhale – Next, you will have to slide forward and upward, arching your back, while keeping your legs and pelvis on the floor. keep in mind that Your hands must be pressing into the floor beside your chest. it is Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose).
