International Mother Language Day 2021: Purpose, Theme

Every year, the day of 21st February is observed as International Mother Language Day (IMLD).

Purpose:

• It aims to create awareness regarding linguistic and cultural diversity and to promote multilingualism.

History:

• The UNESCO made an announcement regarding this day on 17 November 1999 and in 2002, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) recognized this day.

Theme 2021:

• The International Mother Language Day theme 2021 is “Fostering multilingualism for inclusion in education and society”.
