- On 12th April 1961, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin orbited Earth aboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft.

- It is observed as the International Day of Aviation and Cosmonautics in the Soviet Union.
- In 1957, the Soviet Union launched the first human-made satellite named Sputnik I.
- Yuri Gagarin (who was a Soviet citizen and served as a pilot and cosmonaut) made the first human space journey on April 12, 1961.
