  • The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution on April 7, 2011, and established April 12 to be the International Day of Human Space Flight.
  • On 12th April 1961, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin orbited Earth aboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft.

International Day of Human Space Flight in the Soviet Union

  • It is observed as the International Day of Aviation and Cosmonautics in the Soviet Union.
  • In 1957, the Soviet Union launched the first human-made satellite named Sputnik I.
  • Yuri Gagarin (who was a Soviet citizen and served as a pilot and cosmonaut) made the first human space journey on April 12, 1961.
  • Vostok 1 spacecraft became the first to complete an orbit around the Earth.
