Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is spreading in NSW. Check symptoms and what to do if you catch it – NSW Health registered a spike in cases of a lesser-known respiratory virus. Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is on the medical radar since the early 2000s and NSW authorities said the number of weekly cases has climbed from 648 at the beginning of the month to 1,168 in the week ending September 17.

As per the NSW Health, HMPV is normally more common in late winter and spring.

What to do if you get it

  • Stay home when you have cold or flu symptoms
  • Must Wash or sanitise your hands often
  • Must wear a mask in crowded, indoor places
  • Don’t visit people who are at higher risk of severe illness.
