Cabinet approves opening of new Consulates in Maldives, Lithuania

The Cabinet approved the opening of new Consulates in Maldives, Lithuania to respond to a query by a Parliamentary panel on India having only resident Missions in 48 countries out of 193 UN member nations. In 2021, Cabinet also gave approval for the opening of a new Consulate in Addu, Maldives and a new Mission in Lithuania in April 2022.

  • Indian government’s move marks India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and also announced a new Project Executing Agency for the early completion of a portion of road under the Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport project.

Tamil Nadu undertakes project to conserve Nilgiri tahr

The Tamil Nadu state Govt issued orders to conserve the Nilgiri tahr through a project that is touted as the first in the country. Govt will implement a Rs 25.14-crore project during a 5-year period from 2022-2027. Under schedule-I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act of India 1972, the tahr [Locally known as Varaiaadu] has been an endangered species and protected.

  • The Nilgiri tahr project aims to restore its original habitat and try to re-introduce the species in areas where they originally lived.

  • Nilgiri Tahr Day will be observed on October 7, aimed at marking the birth anniversary of E R C Davidar who pioneered the first study on the animal in 1975 to enhance awareness of the need for conserving the animal.

Karnataka passes Bill for new traffic authority

The Karnataka Legislative Assembly passed The Bengaluru Metropolitan Land Transport Authority (BMLTA) Bill, 2022. Bengaluru Metropolitan Land Transport Authority (BMLTA) Bill, 2022 will be applicable to the Urban Mobility Region and will aim at the regulation of development, operation, maintenance, monitoring, (and) supervision of urban mobility.

  • BMLTA will make an “appropriate framework for the engagement of the private sector in planning, development, and management of mobility service delivery.

Karnataka Assembly passes Special Investment Region Bill

Karnataka Assembly has passed the Karnataka Special Investment Region Bill (SIR BILL)-2022 to establish, operate, regulate and manage mega-investment clusters in the state. The bill aims to offer special incentives for new industrial ventures exceeding an area of 2,500 sq km.

  • it will also exist industrial units with an area exceeding 1,250 sq km.
  • The new legislation bill will be applicable to mega-industrial parks.

Maharashtra Assembly Passes Lokayukta Bill, becomes first state to do this

Maharashtra assembly passed the Lokayukta Bill 2022, aimed at bringing the Chief Minister and Council of Ministers under the ambit of the anti-corruption ombudsman. Under the Lokayukta Bill 2022, the Lokayukta will require to take the approval of the assembly before initiating any inquiry against the chief minister and bringing a motion before the session of the house.

  • The Lokayukta will not have to investigate cases involving allegations of corruption against the Chief Minister, which are associated with internal security or public order.

Indian Oil will undertake TB elimination project in Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh

Indian Oil Corp. Ltd. signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Central TB Division (CTD) under the Union health ministry and the states of Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh to undertake intensified tuberculosis (TB) elimination project. The MoU will end Tuberculosis in India by 2025, five years ahead of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG).

  • The MoU also aims to strengthen the efforts to identify TB patients enabling timely treatment.
  • TB diagnostic services will be offered by Indian Oil in Uttar Pradesh and remote tribal areas of Chhattisgarh.
  • The services will be a cost-effective, novel molecular diagnostic machine to improve access, availability, and utilization.

Total govt debt rises to Rs147.19 lakh crore in Q2 FY23

The finance ministry released the quarterly report on public debt management and as per the report, the total liabilities of the government have raised to ₹147.19 lakh crore in September-end from ₹145.72 lakh crore at the end of June this fiscal year.

  • A public debt registered for 88.3% of total gross liabilities in end-June 2022 and accounted for 89.1 percent of total gross liabilities in end-September 2022.
  • The monetary Policy Committee hiked the policy repo rate by 100 bps, i.e., from 4.90% to 5.90% during Q2 largely with an intention to contain inflation.

Hardik Pandya appointed as T20 captain of Team India

Hardik Pandya will act as the captain of India’s T20I squad in its first home series of 2023 against Sri Lanka, announced by BCCI. Rohit Sharma injured his left finger during the ODI series against Bangladesh. Hardik will lead India in T20Is for the second consecutive series. The three-match T20I series will be started in Mumbai on January 3, followed by Pune and Rajkot.

David Warner scored a double century in the 2nd Test between Australia and South Africa and has become the second player to reach the figure in his 100th Test match. Joe Root became the player to have achieved the feat against India in February 2021.
