Amit Shah lays foundation for ‘Rani Gaidinliu Tribal Freedom Fighters Museum’ in Manipur

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has laid the foundation for ‘Rani Gaidinliu Tribal Freedom Fighters Museum’ in the state through video conferencing on 22nd November 2021. it aims to honour the contribution made by freedom fighters of the state during the freedom struggle against British Rule.

  • Rani Gaidinliu Tribal Freedom Fighters Museum will be established at Luangkao village, Tamenglong district, the birthplace of freedom fighter Rani Gaidinliu and the Ministry of Tribal Affairs will fund an estimated cost of Rs 15 crore.

Freedom Fighters Museum in India

  • In 2016, the Tribal Affairs Ministry planned to set up nine museums dedicated to tribal freedom fighters across the country, are being established in Rajpipla in Gujarat, Ranchi (Jharkhand), Lambasingi (Andhra Pradesh), Raipur (Chhattisgarh), Kozhikode(Kerala), Chhindwara (Madhya Pradesh), Hyderabad (Telangana), Senapati (Manipur) and Kelsi (Mizoram).

Who is Rani Gaidinliu

  • Rani Gaidinliu was born on 26th January 1915 at Nungkao village in Tamenglong district of Manipur, was associated with the Rongmei tribe of Manipur.
  • She was a spiritual and political leader.
  • She became the part of the freedom movement at the age of 13,
  • In 1932, she faced life imprisonment, and spent 14 years in jail and was released only after India’s Independence in 1947.
  • The Govt of India awarded Rani Gaidinliu with Tamara Patra in 1972 for her contribution to the freedom movement.
  • She was also the recipient of the Padma Bhushan Award (1982).
  • Indian govt issued a Rs 100 commemorative coin in 2015 on the occasion of her 100th birth anniversary.
